My interest in the Tour de France was dampened somewhat this year by the whole Chris Froome scandal. I ended up keeping an eye on it mostly out of habit in the end. This was not a particularly interesting Tour.
When Porte and then Nibali were knocked out of the race, two of the three main challengers to Sky’s continued dominance were gone and a lot of the drama went out of the race.
This year the course was also a little bit boring, with limited summit finishes and far too many long flat stages. The ‘feature’ stage, a short 65km blast through the mountains with a grid start end up being boring as everyone sat up and waited for their teams, rather than going for it from the start.
The only real highlight was Dumoulin continuing his excellent Grand Tour performances. He seems to be the only person who can consistently challenge Team Sky at the moment.
